1884 Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck and frosty. The almsot wintry blast of white luster is utterly pleasing on this handsome 1884 Liberty Nickel. It would appear to us that all minute detail is fully evident on this bold coin, a pleasing reminder how attractive these are when found in their "as issued" state of preservation. Pop 70; 25 finer, 2 in 65+, 21 in 66, 2 in 66+ (PCGS # 3845) .

Lot 2658
1885 Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. Lightly toned and boldly struck. A key date coin. The 1885 has a mintage of just 1.4 million pieces -- the lowest in the regular-issue Liberty Nickel series after only that of the 1912-S. A very challenging issue to locate in all grades, the 1885 ranks as the second-rarest Nickel of this type in all Mint State grades. Interestingly, the slightly higher-mintage 1886 is actually a bit more challenging to collect, but the difference between these two issues in terms of market availability is so negligible as to be all but moot. In reality, the lower mintage and higher profile of the 1885 usually translates into greater demand for the issue -- demand that is only really matched by the 1912-S among business strikes in this series.

This is a simply beautiful Gem that is the among finer 1885 Nickels we have handled in recent memory. Satiny and smooth, the surfaces exhibit full frost in the fields as the coin reflects light falling on it. The strike 100% full including both ears of corn in the wreath (proverbial weak points in the design), and merges perfectly with the grade as to the definition of First Rate Gem. Far superior to that typically seen for the type. A captivating Key Date that would serve as a centerpiece in the finest Liberty Nickel set. Pop 39; 19 finer, 16 in 66, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67. A nice frosty coin (PCGS # 3846) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Lot 2659
1886 Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck and mostly untoned. Very rare date in MS65. If the 1885 is a higher visibility coin, the 1886 competes by being actually scarcer per the associated PCGS census below. The reason for this misconception appears to us to be found in the lower mintage figure for the 1885 (1.4 vs. 3.3 million pieces). This coin has fully defined features in all areas, including the ear of corn on the lower left portion of the wreath, an often weak point. Full untoned luster covers each side with glowing, satin-like mint bloom ricocheting the light landing upon it. Exceptionally clean as well with lovely, problem-free surfaces. Pop 35; 6 finer, 5 in 66, 1 in 66+ (PCGS # 3847) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

1912-D Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. Nicely toned on both sides with bold frosty luster complementing the natural color. The branch Mints of the US were restricted to either silver and gold coins or (in the case of two pre Civil War Southern Mints, gold coins exclusively). This changed in 1908 when San Francisco was instructed to begin issuing one-cent pieces, and in 1912 when both Denver and San Francisco were authorized to strike five-cent "nickels" of the Liberty Head Type. Scarce. Pop 141; 32 finer, 3 in 65+, 29 in 66 (PCGS # 3874) .

Lot 2691
1912-D Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck. Pale steel blue toning. Well detailed for this more difficult D-mint issue, a lower mintage year, and the first-ever Five-cent coin struck with the Denver mintmark. The delicate toning tries valiantly to compete with the underlying burst of mint frostiness; together these add considerably to the appeal of this nearly pristine Gem.

Business strike Liberty nickels appear to be one of the more undervalued areas in the coin market today. They are very scarce in an absolute sense, especially in comparison to their Philadelphia Mint Proof counterparts, and are also very challenging to locate in Gem grades. Pop 141; 32 finer, 3 in 65+, 29 in 66 (PCGS # 3874) .

Lot 2692
1912-S Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice even toning on both sides. An ideal coin for this important date. What is most in full view when we examine this coin is its thick, smooth mint luster -- it swirls over each side unhindered by abrasions and free of even a trace of carbon flecks. A coin of outstanding beauty and importance to the collector. No more than the luster comes a desirable strike. This 12-S rarity is struck with scientific exactness throughout the design. Pop 181; 29 finer, 19 in 65+, 10 in 66 (PCGS # 3875) .

Like the curious incident of the dog in the night in the Sherlock Holmes story, we report the curious incident of ex President Theodore Roosevelt giving a speech while harboring a bullet in him! October 13, 1912: Three and a half years after he left office, Roosevelt was running for President as a member of the Progressive party established in 1912 by Roosevelt and other political free thinkers, after he split from the Republican Party ranks which he had served as a member of during his Presidency. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, John F. Schrank, a saloon-keeper from New York, shot Roosevelt once with a .38 caliber revolver. A 50-page speech folded over twice in Roosevelt's breast pocket and a metal glasses case slowed the bullet. Amidst the commotion, Roosevelt yelled out, "Quiet! I've been shot." Roosevelt insisted on giving his speech with the bullet still lodged inside him. During his speech Roosevelt stated, "It takes more than one bullet to bring down a Bull Moose" thus further perpetuating Roosevelt's image as a larger than life President and the nickname of the Progressive Party, the Bull Moose Party established in June 1912 after Roosevelt responded to reporters questioning his health stating, "I am as strong as a Bull Moose". He later went to the hospital, but the bullet was never removed. Roosevelt, remembering that William McKinley died after operations to remove his bullet, chose to have his remain. The bullet remained in his body until his death in 1919. The would-be assassin, Schrank said that McKinley's ghost had told him to avenge his assassination. Schrank was found legally insane and was institutionalized until his death in 1943.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

Lot 2693
1912-S Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded MS-65. A well struck gem with smooth spot free surfaces and delicately toned. Rare key date coin. A lovely example, lustrous with light golden and gray toning, of this famous low-mintage issue. Only 238,000 were minted. As is true of every other 1912-S nickel we have seen, there is some slight upraising in the left obverse field and some lightness of strike at the hair at center. As all are this way, this can be considered as a standard feature.

The low mintage stands like a beacon in the Liberty Head nickel series, being the lowest by far of any variety from 1883 through 1912. Further, this represents the first nickel five-cent piece struck at the San Francisco Mint and the only one of this design. Pop 181; 29 finer, 19 in 65+, 10 in 66 (PCGS # 3875) .
